October 19, 2006 by

Yea well with me being a lazy slacker I think it’s time to have another podcast eh.  And better yet it’s this weekend on Saturday when it will be recorded.  We’ll have a couple of special guests this time but not our superpodcast team as last time.  And this time we are going back to our traditional podcast setup so yea.  But that doesn’t mean we don’t need questions.  We need to be flooded with so many comments and questions from you guys that we have to find which ones we need to use haha.  So get on that.  It’s going to be a nice podcast as we kinda go back to the beginnings of our podcasts in those setups.

True Next-Gen – The Debate Continued

October 18, 2006 by

The debate continues to rage. Which console is truly next-gen? Is the definition of ‘next-gen’ purely the next evolution of a generation of console gaming? Or is the definition meaning a huge leap forward, more ‘new-gen’?

I believe that both definitions are correct and that all consoles and their advances apply to ‘new-gen’ as well.

Innovation is not a singular thing. It incorporates a spectrum of areas – hardware, controller-mechanism, graphics, AI, interactivity, storyline, animation, sound, etc.

The bottom-line is that all those advances are directly and indirectly entwined in ‘new-gen’ just as they are simplistically an evolution of previous generation.

The Wii, in its control-mechanism, allows for ‘never-before-seen’ interactivity. You are now literally swinging a bat, a racquet, a sword, aiming a gun, flexing a fishing rod, throwing a bowling ball, your hands actual boxing fists.

There is no doubt the Wii in its Wii-mote innovations is truly ground-breaking.

The Wii’s hardware may not be powerful, but there are processes within it that also make it ground-beaking – 24connect, efficiency of chip, ‘new way’ of graphics rendering, etc.

The PS3 is also ground-breaking. It’s Cell processing power enables developers to push gaming standards in regards to AI, graphics, destructable environments, physics, etc. Individual technologies like Blu-Ray are ground-breaking in themselves only as pieces of hardware (Hi-Def media format), but that is all. SIXAXIS is not ground-breaking as that particular tilt-motion idea has been developed before.

Specific individual things that Sony are adding to its Online system will be ground-breaking in regards to what XBL currently has.

In turn, X360 is ground-breaking in that when it launched it had a wealth of ground-breaking online services/processes never done before, that not only greatly improved upon last-gen but are the first stages of a future multi-device Online capability. Live Anywhere.

X360’s hardware architecture is also ground-breaking for a console. First to release, so first to break ground in multi-core gaming. Like the PS3, it will also allow developers to push gaming standards to allow for innovations in storyline, graphics, AI, physics, etc.

X360 controller broke ground too in being wireless, incorporating headset, and guide button.

Overall, both the power-consoles (PS3 and X360) feature individual bits of hardware/technology that are ground-breaking (eye-toy, blu-ray, wireless adaptor, multi-core/thread gaming, wireless controllers, etc). As systems, they are both breaking ground in enabling developers to push the boundaries of gaming in regards to graphics, AI, physics, storyline, destructability, MMO, sandboxing, etc.

It is up to the developers to reach that potential.

A thing to remember is that innovation, true next-gen, and interactivity are like stories…it is up to the developers (as writers/artists) to dream up new ideas, games, processes, and styles. A story can be told or written in many ways. Via singular interactive Wii-mote control-mechanism, and/or via enhanced processing power.

Therefore, it is wrong to say only the Wii, or only the PS3 is true next-gen. Instead, they all push that idea to differing degrees of “true next-gen”, to varying depths of “true next-gen”.

Nintendo’s idea of reducing hardware power in order to advance controller-mechanism is in itself also a ground-breaking idea – in a time when more power is the standard thinking. I’m not sure whether I agree with this theory, but it has its merits and its drawbacks in regards to “true next-gen”.

If you think about how long and costly it will now take developers to produce interesting games, the Wii’s approach makes it simpler, cheaper. Putting the focus of developers onto the control-mechanism and therefore freeing up their minds to dream up ideas beyond standard controllers allow.

However, a console with enormous processing capabilities means that games can innovate in graphics, AI, physics, sandboxing, and MMO ways that the Wii cannot utilize.

I believe a truly next-gen console would’ve been a Cell processor utilizing a Wii-mote and featuring XBL/Live Anywhere capabilities all done in a Wii processing-efficient manner.

I.e., they all are pushing various areas of true next-gen.

In saying all that, it is significant that the Wii-mote alone is an important true next-gen development because it may well become the future standard, or at least the forerunner to an enhanced future control-mechanism, like one’s own body used in more immersive gaming.

Xbox 360 Impressive Launches

October 18, 2006 by

So the Xbox 360 seems to be a solid console with even a more solid software lineup.  The console has been launched in all the major regions meaning America, Europe, Japan, and Austrailia.  The Xbox 360 just saw its launch in South Africa and India and it is doing extremely well in those areas.  By the end of the year the Xbox 360 will be available in 36 countries, more than any console in the history of gaming in a single year. Exact sales for India and South Africa so far should come in at the end of October.

September 2006 US Hardware and Software Sales

October 16, 2006 by

So have yall missed me.  Yea things is my only excuse.  Otherwise I have none.  So what’s better than to jump back in with sales.  And here’s the  monthly one for America.  Let’s start with hardware as wew always do:

PSP NASCAR 07 – 14,260
PSP 50 CENT: BULLETPROOF – 13,836
PSP NBA LIVE 07 – 13,078

That should be a beastly enough breakdown.  So let’s start off with the top 25.  As you can see it’s still all Madden but Sanit’s Row jumps on in there for a good second.  Then look at the 2 pokemon games up there.  Who said Americans don’t like Pokemon.  Someone lied haha.  But yea interesting.  Check out the 360 software sales with Saint’s Row beasting it up.  Then look at the PSP and DS software sales.  See how much better DS software is selling in America.  Yep go DS.  Just don’t know what Sony is going to do with that PSP eh.

But it’s a very interesting month but next month is where the fun begins and then the month after that will be simply amazing.  The holiday season has begun and at full blast.

Sony Shares Increase By 3.7 Percent.

October 15, 2006 by

Heads-up, loyal Sony fans! It seems that the company’s heading for brighter days, as its stock rose to a whopping 3.7 percent yesterday. Why? We have no idea, but it’s good news.

It seems that Sony’s rating is now “overweight” than the usual “equal-weight” (according to Morgan Stanley analyst Masahiro Ono’s standards), which we think is a good thing. There were several issues that the company faced the last couple of months: there was the PS3 delay, the supposed overheating problem during the TGS, and the usual PS3 bashers. With all the bad publicity, Sony really has “to gain weight” to make up for the 3.6 percent drop they incurred last month.

And gain they did. The 12-month price target was increased from 300 yen to a staggering 5,900 yen (which is around $49). Hmmm… looks like Sony isn’t doing as bad as some people think. Hopefully they’ll be back on their feet once the PS3 is released.

E3 2007 Dates And Location Revealed!

October 15, 2006 by

The new Electronic Entertainment Expo will be held July 11-13 2007 in Santa Monica, California. The convention will take place in the Barker Hangar and a number of hotels where only game developers, retailers, and press are allowed in. Some other events that will be held at E3 2007 will include Serious Games showcase and “Into the Pixel” art exhibit.

“By combining suite-based meetings with the software showcase in a controlled and business-like environment, we believe we will successfully fulfill our primary objective of giving high-level media the best of all worlds — the chance to engage in highly personal, one-on-one dialogue with leading game company executives, as well as the chance to demo games on their own time and to check out offerings from both the best known and emerging game publishers and developers…It will also provide an excellent opportunity for meetings with retailers, developers and other audiences,” said ESA president Douglas Lowenstein.

IGN reports that the hotels participating in E3 will be within walking distance of each other and the ESA will provide shuttle services between the Barker Hangar, hotels, and off-site press conferences.

Japan Picks PS3.

October 12, 2006 by

While the IGN editors were running about the Tokyo Game Show show floor taking videos of and sampling the hottest upcoming Japanese games, the folks at Weekly Famitsu were conducting a survey of show attendees on all areas of next generation gaming. The magazine’s survey managed to reach over 4,000 attendees, although most questions were answered by between 2,500 and 3,000 people.

First up, system price. 65% of those surveyed think the X360 Core System, which will launch in Japan on 11/2 at a retail price of 29,800 yen, is a fair price, compared to 25.2% who think it’s pricey and 9.8% who think it’s cheap. For the PS3, the survey was split between the two models. 56.5% responded that the 49,800 yen 20GB model is pricey, compared with 35.7% who feel it’s just right and 7.8% who feel it’s cheap. For the 60GB model, 64.6% expect the actual retail price to be extremely high, compared to 20.1% who expect it to be just right and 15.3% who believe it will be cheap. For Wii, 60.5% feel the price is just right, compared to 25.9% who feel it’s cheap and 13.6% who feel it’s expensive.

So will anyone actually be buying the new systems? For the 360 Core System, 66.4% said they currently have no plans for a purchase, compared to 1.4% who said they’d buy it on launch day (11/2), 0.8% who said they were hoping to get it as a Christmas gift, 15.1% who said they’ll purchase it if appropriate software comes out, and 16.3% who said they’ll buy only if they have the money to spare. For the PS3, 36.2% said they had no plans to buy the system at this time, compared to 10.5% who said they’d purchase it on launch day, 0.8% who said they were hoping to get one as a Christmas gift, 26.4% who said they’d make the purchase when appropriate software is released, and 26.1% who said they’ll make a purchase if they have money to spare. Responses for the Wii weren’t all that different. 33.0% said they don’t plan on buying the system at this time, compared with 17.8% who plan a launch day purchase, 1.8% who are hoping for a Christmas gift, 26.5% who will make a purchase when suitable software is made available, and 20.9% who said they’ll buy if they have money to spare.

The big games for each system shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. For the 360, Blue Dragon was the most selected title, ahead of Gundam: Operation Troy, Lost Odyssey, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, Earth Self Defense Force 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, Culdecept Saga, Winning Eleven, Lost Planet and Onechanbara VorteX. For the PS3, Metal Gear Solid 4 was the biggest title, followed by Gundam Target in Sight, Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo HD, Hot Shots Golf 5, Armored Core 4, Virtua Fighter 5, Ridge Racer 7, Sonic the Hedgehog and Genji. For Wii, Zelda was the biggest game, followed by Smash Bros. X, Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Made in Wario, Kirby, Mario Party 8, Metroid Prime 3 and Brain Age Academy.

Metal Gear Solid 4 won the vote across all consoles as the game people are most looking forward to. It beat Final Fantasy XIII, Zelda Twilight Princess, Blue Dragon and Smash Bros. X. The portable vote was topped by Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, which beat out Gyakuten Saiban 4, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd and Final Fantasy V.

A Konami title may have taken top honors in the most wanted software category, but attendees selected Nintendo as the company that most holds their interest. The big N was followed by Square Enix, Konami, Capcom and Bandai Namco Games.

Famitsu also asked a few special questions for the various systems. For the PS3, survey takers were asked which model they want more. 65.8% said they want the 60GB model, compared to 34.2% who responded with the 20GB model. For the Wii, Famitsu asked which Virtual Console system players are most looking forward to playing. Super Famicom took 28.6% of the vote, ahead of the original Famicom’s 23.7%, the Nintendo 64’s 16.3%, the PC Engine’s 13.6%, Mega Drive’s 11.3% and the MSX’s 6.5%. Multiple votes were allowed.

The magazine also asked people for their opinion on the Wiimote. 24.5% said it looks unique and user-friendly, just barely beating out the 24% who said it looks hard to use. 19.2% said the ability to use one hand for play is a good thing, while 14.5% expect the one-handed play to feel strange. Multiple votes were allowed.

The PS3 came out on top in the vote for which next generation system players are most looking forward to. 58.3% selected the PS3 as the next generation system they most want, compared to the Wii’s 33.8% and the Xbox 360’s 7.9%. It’s worth noting that the Wii didn’t have an official presence at the show, which is not attended by Nintendo, and was only shown being played by company reps (often scantily clad company reps) in the various 3rd party booths.

Research Findings Put PS3 Way Ahead.

October 12, 2006 by

According to the study by Los Angeles based Interpret, 8.9 million U.S consumers ‘are prepared’ to pay full price ($500 or $600) for the PlayStation 3 this fall, compared to 5.7 million consumers who are willing to buy Wii at $250 and just 800,000 people who are willing to pay full price for Xbox 360 ($300 to $400).

This research, released first to Next Generation, was derived from a sample of 2,000 interviews Interpret conducted online, weighted to 2004 Census data of 13 to 54 year-olds in the U.S. Researchers ran a parallel random digit dial telephone study as a back-up to weigh the data to what the US population looks like to ensure that the online data was not over-representing females, which often occurs with online surveys.

The numbers skew high in general (it will be 2008 before PS3 has an installed base of over 12 million in the US) but what’s interesting is the ratios, and the clear brand presence owned by Sony. Xbox 360 has enjoyed tremendous success in the past year, unopposed by competitors, but the real test will come when it is up against PS3, and is attempting to break into mainstream demographics. If these numbers are true, it has a tough time ahead.

Interpret CEO Michael Dowling said “Actual sales will be dictated by supply constraints, but if Sony had enough supply in the marketplace to fulfill demand, Microsoft would have a very difficult time at its current price point. What Microsoft is hoping for is the early lead helping to drive stronger installed base for them. It’s certainly helped them over the short term”.

Hardcore and Mainstream

Dowling believes Wii will be the spoiler. He said the current generation battle offered consumers a choice of three consoles, but next generation has narrowed that choice to two high-end machines (PS3 and Xbox 360) and one low-priced mass market machine (Wii).

“Nintendo’s marketed Wii as a pick-up-and-play type of device and it seems to be resonating with consumers,” said Dowling. “It wasn’t just older hardcore gamer or younger player, Wii had a pretty wide distribution across age and gender”.

Dowling said that the next generation battle is shaping up much differently than the current generation race. He said that if you look at the U.S. market share in terms of PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, Microsoft has a 2 to 3 percentage-point lead over Nintendo.

“We’re seeing the opposite here with demand for the Wii,” said Dowling, who acknowledged that part of this demand is the lower price point of the console. “People are saying they want to wait and see what PS3 is going to be before they buy an Xbox 360 or Wii”.

Despite the fact that Xbox 360 has been on store shelves for almost a year, Dowling said Microsoft’s console is still attracting very hardcore gamers.

The research also found that despite all of the bells and whistles of PS3 and Xbox 360 with next generation DVD capabilities, online gaming and downloadable content, the key driver for consumers purchasing a new console was the games, especially exclusive games.

The media study is called, “Interpreting the New Media Landscape.” Dowling said the research shows that the new media revolution is real and only getting bigger. The 100-page report shows how television, movie and video game content can double, triple, even quadruple its reach through the embrace of new platforms and business models.

Sony And Xfire Confirm Online PS3 Partnership.

October 12, 2006 by

Xfire is developing a middleware solution that will allow developers to incorporate cross-platform communications between users playing on PC and the PS3 console.

Sony’s PS3 launch title Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom will be the first title to incorporate online functionality via the Xfire gaming service, allowing users to communicate whether using console or home computer.

The announcement confirms rumours that surfaced last month, and highlights Sony’s willingness to incorporate third-party solutions in its answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Live.
“Many of our PC game players already use Xfire to find and play with their friends online,” said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment.

“By integrating Xfire features into our games we are able to strengthen our online community, making it even easier for our players to remain connected, whether they’re on a PC or a PlayStation 3,” he added.

“The opportunity to work with the PlayStation 3 is tremendous,” said Mike Cassidy, CEO of Xfire.

“Many Xfire gamers and game publishers have been asking us about a version of Xfire for console play for some time now. Working with SOE on one of their highly anticipated PlayStation 3 launch titles is a very exciting beginning for Xfire’s new console game product”.

Sony Playstation 3 Launch Q&A.

October 12, 2006 by

With GameStop and EB Games now accepting pre-orders for the Playstation 3 console Firing Squad decided to get some answers from Sony itself about their launch plans for their next-gen product. FiringSquad got some answers from Sony Computer Entertainment America Corporate Communications member Kimberly Otzman (FiringSquad attempted to learn more about their PS3 online plans but our questions to the directed PR folks went unanswered at the time of this news post)

FiringSquad: Why was the decision made to give the US four times as many launch units than Japan? Is it because Sony thinks the US is a more competive market than Japan considering the low sales of the X360 in Japan?

Kimberly Otzman: No, given the efficient distribution system in Japan we can deliver 100K units a week and still reach our original target of 6 million units WW by the end of FY06.

FiringSquad: Can you give us an idea of the percentage of launch units for the $599 PS3 versus the $499 PS3?

Kimberly Otzman: We have yet to announce specific allocations of the SKUs in the North America. This information will be announced at a later date. However, I can report that retailers have shown a very high interest in the high-end PS3 SKU.

FiringSquad: Since there will be a relatively low amount of units for the PS3 for the launch, how will this affect marketing and advertising for the PS3? Will there be less or more accocated for the console compared to what Sony did for the PS2?

Kimberly Otzman: Just to clarify, we are making more PS3 units available at launch than we have for previous launches and compared to what the competition offered last year at launch. Having enough supply to meet our consumer demand is very important to us; we will make every reasonable effort possible to make sure we this will happen.

FiringSquad: How confident is Sony that it can have 1 to 1.2 million PS3 units in the US by the end of the calendar year, especially with the uncertainty of the supplies needed for the console?

Kimberly Otzman: We plan to ship more than 2 million units by the end of the year and our 6 million target by the end of FY06 is unchanged.

FiringSquad: Some financial analysts are lowering their forcasts for the PS3 and the video game industry as a whole downward and some game developers we have talked to have told us they feel the Xbox 360 and the Wii will benefit from these developments. How does Sony feel about these developments?

Kimberly Otzman: We never adjust our business strategies based on competitive movement. If you look at our history, we’ve launched our platforms ahead of our competitors and we’ve launched after, either way, we’ve proven our success time and again.

FiringSquad: What can you tell us at this stage about the online PS3 network for the console? Will it still be dependend on third parties to provide support or will Sony create a central network akin to Xbox Live Arcade?

Kimberly Otzman: SCE is building on the success of its existing online gaming service with the PS2 (currently there are more than 3 million online users) and PSP, and is also partnering with Sony Online Entertainment to create a new online service for PLAYSTATION 3 users. Our goal is to create an environment that is more than just a place to play games, it’s an environment centered on community or a virtual society. The online service for PS3 will be available on day one and will feature online game play, movies, music, chat, web browsing and many more features inherent in building a true online community.

FiringSquad: Neither of the PS3 consoles will ship with any HDMI cords to hook it up to a HDMI compatible HDTV. Since HDMI is one of the big selling points for the PS3, why was the decision made to make the consumer pay extra through a third party to fully use this feature?

Kimberly Otzman: Just to clarify, both configurations now have HDMI ports per our press announcement at TGS and we have not yet announced what accessories or cables will ship with the unit.

FiringSquad: Finally as the launch date for the PS3 gets near, can you give us an idea on what the final line-up of games be like in terms of number on launch day for Nov. 17?

Kimberly Otzman: Details on the PLAYSTATION 3 launch title line-up will for North America will be announced on a future date.

PS3 Pre-Orders Sell Out In Minutes In US.

October 12, 2006 by

Eager early adopters received word last night that EB Games and GameStop stores would be taking pre-orders for Sony’s PS3 on Tuesday 10th Oct . Each store will have a limited number of units available when the system launches on November 17. Stores demanded a dowry of $100 in cash, credit, or trade-in for those precious few.

Many customers camped out overnight for the chance to be one of the first owners of Sony’s next-gen system. At most of the stores that IGN visited or contacted the number of people lined up far exceeded the store’s allocation. The number of pre-orders available varied from four at a store in Detroit, Michigan to 16 at a store in Seattle, Washington. Several employees we contacted said that they were instructed not to disclose the number of pre-orders they were given.

Some clerks would offer a general number when we pressed for details. One Northern California store claimed “less than 20”.

When pressed the clerk laughed and admitted “Okay, like, ten less than 20.”An official representative for GameStop Corp. said that each store recieved “no less than eight pre-orders or up to 16. The number allocated is based on store location and traffic.” The rep went on to state that currently pre-orders for PS3 were closed. Customers can state their preference for which PS3 they would get, either the 20 GB or 60 GB, but there was no indication of what percentage of each version the stores will be provided. Currently, there are no pre-orders available in Canada and the company apologized for the confusion that led some to believe pre-orders were available for all of North America. Canadian PS3 pre-orders will be “available as soon as possible”.

Most of the clerks said that the pre-orders were specifically for the $599 version with the 60Gb hard drive. Most lucky folks who managed to secure the pre-order weren’t given any indication which type of PS3 they would get.

Rumors that the stores have also begun accepting Wii pre-orders have made their way around the ‘Net, too. However, every store IGN contacted said they were not. Keep hope and sleeping bags at the ready — Wii pre-orders will probably start “later this week.” Although Nintendo has made it clear it will have many Wii systems available when the console launches November 19. We’re sure there will be plenty of eager gamers pitching tents across America as soon as they know they can put money down for their own Wii.

Every store IGN spoke to assured us that waiting in line, begging, or offering up golden calves would not get us a PS3 on launch day. However, it is probably a safe bet we’ll still see parking lot campsites spring up in malls across North America on November 16.

Crytek Confident It Could Port Crysis To PS3 & X360.

October 8, 2006 by

Crytek’s lead artist, Michael Khaimzon, has revealed that the developer could confidently port highly-anticipated PC title Crysis to PS3 and X360 – although there are no current plans to do so.

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Khaimzon said, “I don’t think there would be any problem to convert anything we work on to the next-gen consoles if we decided to.

“We have enough power here, with programmers and artists, to be able to do such a thing. It’s just a matter of making the decision”.

Khaimzon’s comments will only fan the flames of rumour which surround Crysis – a first-person shooter already wowing consumers and critics alike – that publisher Electronic Arts may bring the game to home consoles after release on PC early next year.

Discussing whether the team at Crytek would be interested in working on the next-generation of home consoles, Khaimzon added: “I’m pretty sure it would be interesting for us to do stuff on the PS3 or X360.

“We would just have to see how much of a sacrifice to the game we’d have to make. Or whether there would be a sacrifice at all, maybe we could find a way to make the game look exactly the same as it does on PC on the X360 and the PS3”.

When asked directly whether there was a possibility that Crysis would appear on home consoles, Khaimzon replied: “There might be, the decision isn’t mine to make. I don’t know of any official plans to do so, but I know there are rumours and talk, but I couldn’t say anything concrete”.

Japanese Developers Take Next Gen Survey.

October 8, 2006 by

We all know what fanboys think about the consoles of their choice (as well as their thoughts about the others). The question is what do Japanese game developers think about the next-gen consoles? Famitsu Mag took it upon themselves to ask 58 game developers (directors, programmers and designers) from 19 game companies about next-gen consoles and here are the results.

Which next-gen console will send cash registers ringing:
Wii (60%)
PS3 (37%)
Xbox 360’s (3%)

Which system they prefer for game development:

Wii (63%)
PS3 (32%)
Xbox 360s (5%)

Console price (3 votes)
Also mentioned: hardware size, the concept of moving your body, and the focus on light users

There you have it. It shouldn’t come as a Taser-like shock to Xbox 360 fanboys that their console didn’t score very well. MS has been struggling with getting the Xbox 360 off the ground in the Japanese market. The company, however, is doubling its efforts to keep up with its upcoming Japanese counterparts. But as far as the Japanese game developers are concerned, the next-gen console wars is shaping up to be a duke-fest between Wii and PS3, with Nintendo’s console having the upperhand.

Sony: PS3 Problems ‘Unsubstantiated’.

October 8, 2006 by

Sony stock fell 2.75 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange after several analyst downgrades sent traders scrambling. One of the reports, issued by Macquarie Equities’ David Gibson, expressed concern that many of the 200-plus PS3’s on the floor of the 2006 Tokyo Game Show “operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset,” according to the AP.

“While the reason for this is unknown, we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue,” Gibson said. “We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production and is clearly negative news for the company”.

Today, Sony fired back, blasting Gibson’s note. “If you read the report from Macquarie closely, you can see that their reports are unsubstantiated and that comments related to the alleged failure of PS3 units at TGS are also not attributed to a source,” countered Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s senior director of corporate communications, in an e-mail to GameSpot.

A statement from Sony seconded Karraker’s comments. “Despite the report from Macquarie Securities implying that they had heard of reports of PS3s needing to be rebooted at TGS, SCEI are not aware of any instances of this occurring at TGS, nor have we received any reports from third parties to such effect,” it proclaimed.

That said, Sony did concede, “The environmental conditions at TGS conspire to test any electrical item. In the case of PS3, the combination of pre-production software, running on pre-production debug units, enclosed in demonstration units without ventilation, and surrounded by so many eager fans that on Saturday and Sunday it was almost impossible to move, are bound to prove a challenge. If indeed, there was the occasional unit that needed rebooting, it was due solely to the adverse environmental conditions within the Hall and not to any more general problem with PS3”.

However, there was no company’s bottom line. “On the Press Day on Friday, and throughout the weekend the PlayStation stand was inundated by specialist gaming media, the majority of whom would have noticed if there had been a general problem with console overheating…[The] PS3 does not suffer from an overheating problem”.

Open Letter to all gamers and fanboys.

October 6, 2006 by

So much has been written and argued about the three consoles themselves, so much analysis, so much debate focused on the specific hardware or software issues, that one particular area has not yet been touched on. The war and analysis between the fanboys and fangirls itself.

Playstation (PS) fans main talking points are the power of the PS3 and the extra tech stuff like HDMI, 1080p, Blu-Ray. They assume that Xbox (XB) and Nintendo fans are jealous of it. Their main attitude is a daily boasting and gloating about the systems power and tech.

Last-gen…They couldn’t admit that the PS2 was inferior in power and features to the Xbox. They couldn’t admit that the Gamecube could output better graphics. They couldn’t admit that of all three consoles the PS2 was the most buggy and prone to breaking down. Sure, some people never had a problem, but outside of one’s little world, the problems were there, and far outnumbered the amount of problems the Xbox or Gamecube had.

Whether they admitted it or not, the main debates they had, when XB fans would boast about the power, they would retort, “So what, it’s all about the games, we have a far bigger and better library. Even if the extra power of the Xbox meant that games run a little better, the bottom line is Xbox suffered from a lack of titles and therefore owning a PS2 was better, and sold 100 million consoles. So, haha.”

Next-Gen…The thing now is that due to their experiences last-gen, XB fans have matured a little more and accepted that winning the power race isn’t everything. In fact, it isn’t the race itself. Power can and can’t be good, but that raw extra power difference isn’t so important to a better gaming experience. XB fans have realized that games library is more important.

However, PS fans have degraded in time. After years of knowing deep down that the Xbox was more powerful and that Gamecube had the better graphics, it’s like they secretly were jealous all along. It’s become their main focus in next-gen. Both to Sony itself and PS fans. They have veered away from the games topic because their attitude has gone backwards to the power issue. Now, the XB and Nintendo fans are like, “So what, grow up, didn’t you learn anything from last-gen? It is not about the extra power, you were right, it is about the games.”

Yet, each day they are feverishly fixated on information and specifications about HDMI, 1080p, Blu-Ray, and that small percentage better performance in the Cell. XB and Nintendo fans laugh and/or tire of this because PS fans (and Sony) have become crazed obsessional types, like kids in a candy store, over anything to do with performance or hardware issues. PS fans now mistakenly think that what makes a game better or more enjoyable is purely graphical or power orientated.

They diss the ‘gameplay’ argument like they still don’t get it, or like they think Nintendo fans are playing some sly flame wars game. To them, it seems more important and the reason why a game is better is because the extra power means shirts and shorts can flap around, that instead of 100 twins in the crowd there can be 50, that textures on arms and clothing are rendered marginally or fairly better. Or, at best, they think that having these extra things can only be a good thing. Not realizing that this whole graphics focus forces developers to invest more time and money on coding for that than on actually making enjoyable or innovative gameplay.

The whole debate about which console is more powerful, or more efficient, is arguable anyway. Most of the info is theoritical. There are experts on both sides who say this or that. Sure, the consensus is that PS3 is slightly more powerful. However, mainly in an overall sense. There are specific things here and there which the X360 can do better, and things here and there that PS3 can do better. There are specific things here and there that the Wii is more efficient at.

The argument is still raging since E3 2005 only because PS fans cannot give and take. They cannot rest on the idea that the two consoles are fairly equal overall, or that the X360 is better at doing some things. They’re crazed and obsessional about these minor power topics that they have to keep debating it, keep denying any article/comment that says X360 is better at doing something than the PS3, or that Wii gameplay innovations might be more popular than raw PS3 graphics. Due to this, they’ve slowly but surely lost touch with the most essential topic – games, games library, gameplay.

It has become so bad that if X360 or Wii shows off some cool looking/playing game the PS fans have to jump in and quickly put it down – flaming the graphics compared to PS3, the shirts of players don’t billow as good as they do on PS3, the rendering capabilities are 3% worse than compared to PS3. They can’t seem to praise anything else because they have this inferiority/superiority complex now.

If a great game comes out on X360 and there’s a lot of praise/hype going around on the internet about it, they take it like a direct put down was made to the PS3 and to PS fans that they all rally together needing to throw water on the game, calling the developers liars, saying Microsoft paid them to tell lies, that the game will look better on PS3. They just can’t seem to give credit where credit is due because it’s all about boasting.

Meanwhile, most Nintendo and XB fans are more objective and can actually praise PS3 games that are good. If those fans aren’t overly impressed with a PS3 game, they take it like they’re lying, they’re jealous, it’s all some sly fanboyistic flame war. They refuse to acknowledge that it might just be an honest opinion or that the more popular opinion might be turning away from a graphics-centric attitude to a gameplay-centric attitude.

To be a PS fan means that power is everything, tech specs are very important, and graphics is the focus, and it’s all about every single game being better on the PS3 than any game on Wii or X360. They need to feel superior in every little way otherwise they feel inferior completely.

To be an XB fan means that you like a lot of power but ultimately it’s all about the games and the services – like XBL, Live Anywhere, etc.

To be a Nintendo fan means that it’s all about gameplay and innovation, fun and change, away from the whole power-centric focus. You do have graphic whoring appreciation, but not to the point where it starts detrimenting gameplay and in-game features/modes.

So, when Nintendo or XB fans talk about how good a particular game on their console is, PS fans automatically assume that everyone thinks like them, that power and graphics is everything, that tech specs are very important and that anything that Nintendo or XB fans judge to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ is wrong because they’re not looking at it all like PS fans do. Seemingly, only the PS/Sony point of view is right.

PS fans just can’t seem to accept that perhaps more people are starting to not care anymore or as much about Hi-Def optical media, about HDMI, about Bluetooth, about a .5 ghz performance difference, etc. They seemingly cannot believe that the global consumer might be more inclined towards gameplay and services, not on sheer graphics.

PS fans think that when others mention the price and extranneous tech features as bad aspects about the PS3, or factors why they dont want one, that they’re only saying that because they’re jealous or because they hate Sony or the PS3. In reality, people are just starting to not care so much anymore, they’ve changed, grown, matured in their outlook about gaming, especially awoken to the scams and costs that ‘next-gen’ has meant already and will only grow to mean.

While Microsoft itself is determined to incorporate HDMI, 1080p, etc, it doesn’t mean that the XB fans themselves are overly impressed by them. Especially as it all means more cost to them. They’re thankful at least that they’re not being ‘forced’ into getting all those things, due to the design of the X360 meaning such things are add-ons, not built-in. They feel that if they had to have them, they will reasonably hope and wait for overall price cuts before they do – because while it’s good, it’s still not the important thing, so they can live and game quite happily without all that extra gadgetry.

Absurdly, the war rages in whatever industry where there is a product. Console gamers will take the same sides in an MP3 player debate. In a hand-held debate. In an OS debate. All done almost automatically. As though by very allegiance to one product it means an allegiance to brand name as well. Of course, not everyone is like this, and not everyone is so biased and brand-loyal. But it only takes a handful of these types in any forum around the world for matters to escalate and sides taken by the neutral ones.

In forums around the world, every day there are thousands of people aggravated and addicted to fanboyistic flame wars. While even rabid debate is a good thing, there are certain areas where the very Fanboy Wars have reached absurdity. At the center of it all is a need for all fans to give and take (or PWN and be PWNED) sincerely, not egotistically. As in, not continuing to assert something and fuel the flaming if one is proven wrong about something, or a consensus of agreement is reached about a particular topic.

Let’s all move on a bit from the attitude that at heart is some literal war or hatred among gamers with loyalties to other console manufacturers. The only reason at times there is a wave of anti-Sony, anti-PS3 or anti-PS fan sentiment is because the self-superiority, mockery, prejudice or flaming starts on the Sony or PS side of things. Or the obsessional tech-centric focus gets out of hand.

The onus is on you.

Japanese Hardware and Software Sales for Sept 18-24

October 5, 2006 by

Ah gosh I really need a reminder for sales haha.  Unluckily my source for Best Buy sales didn’t update them but still always got the wonderful world of Japan.  Now with Pokemon being released the week after this one sales are bound to be a little lower but let’s check em out:

Nintendo DS Lite – 139,835
PS2 – 32,673
PSP – 23,118
Game Boy Advance SP – 2,145
Game Boy Micro – 1,186
X360 – 1,109
GameCube – 763
Nintendo DS – 316
Game Boy Advance – 20
Xbox – 8

Ah not much different but X360 did come back up to 4 digits.  Sad that we have to be happy for it doing that.  Simply sad.  Other than that things stayed pretty much the same except PSP and PS2 took each other’s place.  Other than that still DS ownage.  Onto software:

Rank/Game/Units sold/Total Units Sold
1. PS2 Minna no Tennis 87,814 / 314,790

2. NDS Final Fantasy III 56,596 / 712,129
3. NDS New Super Mario Bros. 56,045 / 3,136,171
4. NDS
Gintama DS: Yorozuya Daisoudou 39,737 / NEW
5. NDS Brain Training 2 34,879 / 3,221,750
6. NDS Animal Crossing: Wild World 25,617 / 3,256,171

7. PS2 Rurouni Kenshin: Enjou! Kyoto Rinne 24712 / 99720
8. NDS Tingle RPG 23,168 / 114,208
9. NDS Cooking Navi 22,504 / 488,462
10.NDS Harukanaru Toki no Naka De 22,100 / NEW

Ah so the PS2 titles continue to stay at the top yet still rest is owned by DS as it took 8 slots.  Overall all the same and FFIII is really pushign the 1 million mark.  But next week it’s going to be all pokemon and all DS.  It is stated that the Dead Rising game is supposed to make the top charts but I dont’ see that happening.  We’ll find out.  I personally think DS will simply own the charts.

Correlation between PSP vs DS and PS3 vs Wii

October 5, 2006 by

The reasons given by commentators, analysts, and gamers why the PSP is losing so badly to the DS are the same reasons given for why the PS3 is more likely to lose out to X360 and the Wii. Emphasis – more likely than not.

The reasons (not game focused, new risky media format, trying to cram in too much non-game related tech/features, buggy hardware/software, games just ports most of the time, far more expensive than its rival, etc.)

The huge popularity of the DS, and it’s similarities with the Wii, bodes well that the Wii and Nintendo will again re-emerge in the console market. The whole argument of (gameplay > graphics, affordability > unneccessary features, innovation > ports) is very sound. Not to be under-estimated.

The dynamics of next-gen console might or might not have changed in the eyes of the consumer, we don’t know if they for sure want Wii-like affordability and innovations at a graphical expense over Ps3-like expensive multimedia features at a gameplay/game-innovation expense. But one thing is for sure, the threat/challenge is there than most anticipate.

Fun is always the over-riding factor in anything. Especially cheap carefree fun, kid-like. People have more fun sitting around a table chatting, playing cards, and getting drunk than they would on expensive fun. How many car owners do you know, with very expensive prestige cars or pimped rides that cost a fortune, and the car spends 90% of the time locked in the garage? Yet these same people would have more fun driving around in a cheap older model car with some buddies laughing and being silly. Not the best analogy, but you get the drift.

Sheer fun is most fun when it’s cheap, easy, carefree and involves interaction with others on a person-to-person basis. Online multiplayer is so much more fun than single-player mode. Due to that interactivity. In a gaming sense, interactivity (between gamer and game, between gamer and gamer) is where the whole next-gen is heading.

Pro Evolution Soccer Wii

October 5, 2006 by

Well although Konami has not come out and officially announced the title it has been confirmed that Pro Evolution Soccer will be coming to the Wii.  This definelty excites all the rest of the world besides America who will definetly love this game especially with the new immersive, intuitive Wiimote.  Also discussed in the article is that EA is doing testing by strapping a wiimote to the foot which hints at FIFA coming to the Wii.  Now that would be awesome.  May have to look into a soccer game.

Source

This actually really excites me.  I mean I hope they think of something really intuitive to play soccer on the Wii.  I mean the Super Mario Stikers: Charged really just show how it would work with the wiimote in the hand but maybe a seperate peripheal or something like that to really make you feel like your playing would really go along way.  This ought to really make the rest of the world excited for the Wii to get a huge title such as this.

Nintendo Raises DS and GBA Sales Forecast

October 5, 2006 by

Ah and if the Nintendo Handheld combination hasn’t owned the hell out of the competion enough Nintendo is raising the sales forecast again.  Nintendo has raised it’s sales forecast from this year from 17 million to 20 million.  Which now puts there goal of 32 million units sold by March 2007 to 35 million.  They also raised the sales that they’d sale 82 million software units for the DS.  They also raised the sales total of the GBA by 32% to 3.3 million units sold this year.

Source

Damn that is incredible.  After 2 years and 3 months Nintendo is predicting 35 million units shipped and sold.  Incredible.  And the GBA is still kicking.  3.3 million units in a year is quite impressive for a handheld released almost 10 years ago.  Overall Nintendo is ruling the handheld market.  I really don’t think the PSP can keep up especially in software which is what slaes the system.  With 20 million being sold each  year and taking the market they could easily reach 100 million units sold in the coming years and may even overtake the best selling gaming hardware ever, the Game Boy.
